We’ve had a number of inexpensive date nights over the last few weeks. I’m so my Mother’s daughter and find myself cutting coupons for restaurants and great outings. I always forget the grocery ones, and rarely remember my grocery bags but I love finding those $30 date nights suggestions in my Valpak.

Grouon is a site that sends you a daily email about specials in your area. It’s half price dinners, movie nights, facials. They wouldn’t take my half priced therapy coupon (:(), but in discussions with their area manger, they were committed to adding more options for date nights.

We’ve been bowling (naked – seriously, but that’s another story), a tapas bar and salsa lessons from our Groupon coupons. Our goal is to get our dates to under $30.

But every now and then we splurge.

On our bucket list was dinner at Castlegarth in White Lake. It has been listed as one of ten best resaurants in Ottawa. It’s on the way to the our cottage in Calabogie and is in a quaint heritage building across from the water in White Lake. With our $95 bill (including a $60 groupon coupon) was over the $30, but it was a discerning evening out for a Friday night.

The menu changes daily and they emphasize local foods. Great wine list, they specialize in single malt scotches and hae a take out local foods area. Choices of lamb, duck, chicken, steak, and Pacific sardines rounded out the main course selections. To be honest the food was inconsistent. My goat cheese and beet salad was outstanding, but I found the duck tough. Blaik was mediocre on his tomoato soup and didn’t like his lamb at all. He thught the value wasn’t there, and gave the experience a 4 out of 10.

I love the idea of local, organic foods prepared expertly. We have a number of smaller restaurants to try over the summer. They move to the top of the list if they can come in at $30, but we’ll keep you posted on what we suggest.
